The municipality of General San Martín (locally known as San Martín; 427,933 inhabitants; 56 sq.km) borders Buenos Aires in the west.
General San Martín, named for the hero of the Argentine independence, is the birth place of José Hernández (1834-1886); author of the
gauchesque epos "El Gaucho Martín Fierro" (1872) and "La vuelta de Martín Fierro" (1879), Hernández is considered as the Argentine
national poet. He was also one of the leaders of the rebellion of the gauchos (1852-1872) against the central power.
General San Martín is today a main industrial town and the organizer of the yearly EPSAM fair, the main event in Argentina dedicated to
small and medium companies.

"El Comercio Online", 18 August 2010, reports the adoption of the flag of General San Martín. The flag, selected by a jury among more than 30
submissions, shall be presented during the next EPSAM fair, 2-5 September 2010.
The winning proposal, designed by Leopoldo di Salvo, matches the selection criteria, "symbolism, simplicity, easy reproduction and
clear visibility", as well as the prohibition of "letters, mottos, numbers and non-reversible elements". The proposd design symbolically
reflects the industrial achievement and the cultural development for the municipality, as well as the commitment to progress.

The flag of General San Martín is horizontally divided golden-yelllow-green with a blue triangle placed along the hoist. The three fields of
the flag are separated by a white fimbriation. The blue triangle is charged with a white half-cogwheel. The blue triangle forms an arrow representing the industrial progress, symbolized by the cogwheel, and the cultural development of the town. Green represents the plain while golden yellow represents the sun.

It seems, accordingly, that the flag was presented upside down and not fully unfolded during its inauguration - and is still presented so on the municipal website.
