The town and municipality ("partido") of La Plata (574,369 inhabitants; 94,038 ha), located 60 km south of Buenos Aires [City], is the capital of the Province of Buenos Aires. The town was officially founded on 19 November 1882 by Governor Dardo Rocha as the new capital of the province, Buenos Aires [City] having been declared a Federal District in 1880.

Description of the flag

The Ciudad de La Plata has an official flag now.

Through a contest called “Una bandera para mi Ciudad” (a flag for my city) sponsored by the local government, several high schools submitted theyr proposals and the city chose last night the winning bidder. The chosen flag was proposal No. 16, designed by Nahuel Alejandro Álvarez with the help of art school teachers from Escuela Media Nº 34. The voting was carried out by SMS, and it won by a close margin, proposal No. 12 being the second one, and in total, overcoming 20 finalist proposals.

The white square symbolizes de city downtown (Plaza Moreno, Moreno Square), where the cornerstone is found. The square then integrates into a bigger square with round corners, resembling the city's cartographic urban design (French style of the XIXth century). The diagonals that cross it, symbolize the communication of the urban city with its neighborhoods.

The light blue color is a reference to the national flag. The white stands for union in the city's design and also a reference to the national flag. The green stands for its environmental landscape throughout the city.

Previous flag proposal

"Diario Hoy" reports that a group of alumni of the class 1947 of the "Colegio Nacional" of La Plata have designed a flag proposal for La Plata, after having realized that the town had no flag, while several towns of the province have one. The flag proposal was presented to the municipal administration last month.

The proposed flag is based on the Argentine national flag, with a white stripe between two celeste blue stripes. However, the limit of the stripes is not horizontal but made of an horizontal segment flanked by two diagonal ones, to recall the urban architecture, and, specifically, the street pattern of the town (La Plata is nicknamed "la ciudad de las diagonales", "the town of diagonals"). The upper stripe bears a white label with the name of the town. The lower stripe bears a similar label with the town's motto "Creada como prenda de unión nacional" From the tiny photography shown by the source, it seems that the Argentine sun is placed in the white stripe.

It is possible to watch the image bigger in the cache memory. The central yellow element of that proposal is not a sun, but a map of La Plata City with its traditional diagonal streets.

Emblem in 1952-1955 (as Eva Perón City)

In 1952, [a variant of] the Justicialist Party emblem was adopted as the coat of arms of Eva Perón City (before and now La Plata). [This variant had] the image of Eva Perón in the center (very similar to the contemporary Coat of Arms of La Pampa Province). In 1955, September 4th, Perón falls, and the military take the power ending the process.
