Peter Diem, 16 August 2002
The coat of arms of the "Bundesland" (federal state) Oberösterreich is a shield
with, on the left, a golden eagle armed with red tongue and red claws on a black background.
On the right it is divided three times in silver and red.
The shield has on the top the archducal hat of Austria.

The German speaks of an Erzherzogshut, which translates literally as
an archducal cap of maintenance, but there is in fact a coronet enclosing the
cap of maintenance. (When a coronet or crown is mentioned, the cap of
maintenance does not appear in the blazon. It is only blazoned if it appears on
its own, without a coronet. Many Scottish lords display caps of maintenance.)
When a cap of maintenance is mentioned in German (in conjunction with a crown),
it is frequently called a Kronmütze (crown-cap).
