The Illawarra region is an area just south of Sydney on the NSW coast,
centred around Lake Illawarra. The major city is Wollongong. I have
received from John Vaughan a picture of a proposed Illawarra regional
flag, presumably a similar concept to his Greater Sydney
and Greater Melbourne ensigns. I assume
the flag will always be 'unoffical', as there is no body to adopt it
officially, but John says that the details have been sent to the local
paper, The Illawarra Mercury, to test interest in the concept.

Ratio overall, 1:2 with centre field square
Colours: Hoist and fly panels, Royal Blue field; at centre, white square.
Illawarra Flame Tree, red with black outlines (keylines).
Trunk and branches in solid black.
Southern Cross stars [surrounding the tree - ed.], Royal blue.
SYMBOLISM:- The Illawarra Flame tree, attractive and well known native
tree of the region, links the heritage of the local Aborigines with the
people who have arrived since 1788 and made the Illawarra their home. The
distinctive Australian pattern of the Southern Cross alludes to the
geographical position of the Illawarra. The blue panels represent the
regions ideal climate, under clear blue skies, and its position on the
coast of New South Wales adjacent to the magnificent ocean.
