The symbols of Sarajevo Canton are prescribed by Law Zakon o grbu i zastavi Kantona Sarajevo (text), adopted on 28 April 1999 by the Canton Assembly and published on 11 May 1999 in the Canton official gazette Službene novine Kantona Sarajevo, No. 9.
The use of the symbols is prescribed by Law Zakon o upotrebi grba i zastave Kantona Sarajevo, adopted on 28 April 1999 and published on 11 May 1999 in Službene novine Kantona Sarajevo, No. 9, subsequently amended by Law Zakon o izmjenama Zakona o upotrebi grba i zastave Kantona Sarajevo, adopted on 10 July 2003 y and published the same day in Službene novine Kantona Sarajevo, No. 16, and by Law Zakon o izmjenama i dopunama Zakona o upotrebi grba i zastave Kantona Sarajevo, published in 2008 in Službene novine Kantona Sarajevo, No. 39. The Law was eventually consolidated as Zakon o upotrebi grba i zastave Kantona Sarajevo (prečišćeni tekst) (text), adopted on 23 January 2009 and published in Službene novine Kantona Sarajevo, No. 3.
The flag (photo) is prescribed in proportions 3:5 (horizontal) or 5:3 (vertical), white with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Sarajevo Canton - Image by Željko Heimer, 31 December 2012
The coat of arms is "Per pale gules (Bordeaux red) and azure (dark blue) and overall nine mullets or, four and three and two, a dimidiated rosette and doorknob argent.
The colours are given as:
- Bordeaux: CMYK (%) 0-100-100-40;
- Dark blue: CMYK (%) 40-40-0-60.
The device in the base of the shield represents a doorknob; its dexter part is a rosace from the cathedral (and formerly a part of the synagogue) while its sinister part comes from the Svrzina kuća Ottoman house. The two parts are linked with a ring. I think that the whole means that there are Croats and Bosniaks in the canton; the ring is binding the two communities. The nine eight-pointed stars stand for the municipalities forming the canton. The star placed over the blue and red fields probably represents the town of Sarajevo.
