Presentation of Gradiška

The municipality was named Bosanska Gradiška before the 1990s. The Republika Srpska authorities use the name Gradiška, while the Federation still uses the previous name; the State authorities use both names.

The coat of arms of Gradiška (image) is prescribed by Decision Odluka o utvrđivanju simbola opštine Gradiška (text), adopted on 3 April 2000 by the Municipal Council and published in the Municipal official gazette Službeni glasnik opštine Gradiška.

The lengthy description of the symbol and its meaning. can be summarized as follows. The symbol of Gradiška is in a rectangular shield shape with the top edge embowed, with a circular orange notched charge containing blue elements depicting a boat on a river under the mountains, a cross ornament, oak leaves and maize ears, rainbow arches and the white inscription of the municipality name.
The top edge of the shield is said to represent a šajkača, the Serbian military headgear, as a symbol of "respect towards all victims of defensive wars". The notched circular shape is said to represent an old coin. The symbols within represent a boat sailing on river river Sava, as symbol of "voyages both to the future and to the past". The mountains represent Kozara, the "invincible and defiant 'blood-soaked', spreading its wings to encompass both the town and the river". The cross is said to have triple symbolic: as a religious symbol of the Orthodox Church, as the statehood symbol and as an ethnographic detail found as ornament on distaffs (rock, spinning tool). The oak leaves are a spiritual symbol of purity, strength and longevity, as well as a symbol of economy, wood richness and industry. The ears are said to represent the Lijevče plain surrounding the town, agriculture and food industry. The rainbow arches symbolize also a bridge. The blue colour is said to represent justice and truth as well as the Serb people. Orange is the colour of old coins, old gold, ripe corn and of the rebirth of sun. White stands for purity, eternal values and perfection. Orange and white may be replaced with gold and silver in depictions of the arms.
