Presentation of Fauvillers

The municipality of Fauvillers (in Luxembourgian, Fäteler; 2,071 inhabitants on 1 January 2007; 7,411 ha) is located on the border with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The municipality of Fauvillers is made since 1976 of the former municipalities of Fauvillers, Hollange and Tintange (in Luxembourgian, Tënnen).

Fauvillers is located on a wide promontory surrounded by the valleys of the Sûre, the Basseille and the Traquebois. The village is a very ancient crossroads. In 1878, a diadem from the Age of Bronze was found there; at the same time, a Gallo-Roman villa was excavated in Hahnebour, most probably the villa feitus that gave its name to the village (via the German name, Feitweiler). In 1184, Fauvillers was a free domain depending on the abbey of Saint-Hubert. In 1469, the village had 26 houses, 18 of them depending on the Municipality of Hotte and on the Provostship of Bastogne, whereas the eight remaining houses depended on the Municipality of Martelange and of the Provostship of Arlon. The Roll of Arms by Jacoby and Mönchen assigns the arms "Argent three merlettes sable in base three mullets gules 2 and 1" for the lords of Fauvillers, but there is no historical evidence of any of these lords.

Tintange is located on a hill surrounded by the valleys of the Sûre, the Syrbach and the Molscht. It was in the Gallo-Roman times Tinto's estate. The center of the village, made of the church, the presbytery and the cemetary, dates back to 1785. The ancient village of Romeldange, located on the Sûre, can be reached only by foot; the wooden bridge linking there Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was restored in 2002.

On 10 May 1940, Commandant Bricart and some 70 Chasseurs Ardennais resisted for more 10 hours to the German invaders near the village of Bodange. Nine soldiers and the Commandant were killed during the fighting, which allowed the other Belgian companies to withdraw.
