Flag of the Twinning committe of Saint-Barthélemy and Piteå - Image by Olivier Touzeau, 28 November 2021
Saint-Barthélemy was a colony of Sweden for nearly 100 years, before its handover to France in 1878.
In Saint-Barthélemy, the Piteå Day commemorates the twinning of collectivity with the town of Piteå, in Norrbotten, Sweden, and more generally the friendship between Saint-Barth and Sweden. The events and ceremonies organized in honor of Sweden (reproduction of the assault by a Swedish ship on the island, performances by Swedish artists and musicians, traditional dances and period cuisine) are accompanied by a series activities linked to the sea and the beach (fishing competition, beach volleyball, regatta, etc.). Another example is the traditional Gustavialoppet running race, a Swedish marathon.
The twinning with Piteå dates back to 1978.
A flag with the emblem of the twinning committee could be seen for example during the exhibition "140 years of Franco-Swedish History" at the WallHouse Museum in Gustavia in 2018 (photo). The emblem mixes the shield of the arms of Piteå with the the two pelicans supporting the arms of Saint-Barthélemy, and the french and swedish flags.
