The flag of Ouro Fino ("fine gold") is yellow with a red horizontal stripe,
the coat of arms in lower hoist and a flaming torch in upper fly. The
yellow is for gold. The torch symbolizes the sacred fire of civic spirit,
the spirit of struggle and ardor for victory, and lights the way to the
future. The red stripe represents progress and also refers to the color of
coffee beans. The coat of arms was designed by Dr. José Guimarães and
approved by Law No. 36, published on 5 December 1948. On a blue field,
three stylized black prospecting pans full of gold ore, one and two,
represent the gold works of Ouro Fino, São Pedro, and Santa Isabel, from
which the town originated. In chief, the Latin word CHARITAS in gold
letters remembers an event in the life of the city's patron saint, St.
Francis de Paul, whose chapel was elevated to be the parish church on 8
March 1749, constituting the original nucleus of the present city of Ouro Fino.
