About the Flag

The three flags of this municipality (two past and one present) are at http://www.camara-americana.sp.gov.br/bandeiras.htm. This is probably the current one. Coats of arms are at this page.
Dov Gutterman, 30 June 2001

The flag is one of Lauro Ribeiro Escobar's standard designs, a series of progressively smaller triangles based on the hoist forming pointed chevrons pointing toward the fly of the flag, in this case white, blue, and white,on a red field, with the coat of arms in the hoist. The coat of arms in its current form was adopted in 1998, replacing one based on the Confederate battle flag, which commemorated the immigration to Americana of large numbers of Confederate veterans and their families after the American Civil War. The current coat of arms is red with the following charges in gold:
1. In chief, a St. Anthony (tau) cross, symbolizing the patron saint of the municipality.
2. In the center, a beehive flanked by two bees, symbol of industry that also appeared on two earlier municipal coats of arms.
3. In base, two crossed axes, commemorating the original ranch around which the city developed.
4. In dexter, a textile spindle.
5. In sinister, a plow, commemorating the North American involvement in the community.
The shield is supported by branches of coffee and cotton. The scroll reads Ex labore dulcedo, or "From work, sweetness."
Joseph McMillan, 13 March 2002
