About the Flag

The municipality of Ipiguá (4,463 inhabitants in 2010; 13,680 ha) is located in northern São Paulo State, 20 km of São José do Rio Preto and 470 km of São Paulo.

Ipiguá was founded in 1920 by the pharmacist João Pacheco de Lima, who offered a piece of land to establish a new settlement, originally called Barra Funda. The district of Ipiguá was established by Law No. 2,218 of 7 December 1927, as part of the municipality of Rio Preto (today, São José do Rio Preto). The municipality of Ipiguá was established by State Law No. 8,550 of 30 December 1993 and inaugurated on 1 January 1997.

The symbols of Ipiguá are prescribed in Article 3 of the Municipal Constitution, adopted on 19 September 1997, as "the coat of arms, the flag and other symbols established by Municipal Law".

The flag of Ipiguá is light blue with a thin green and white border and an emblem in the middle (not the municipal coat of arms). The emblem is made of a white disk charged with a blue stripe inscribed with the municipality's name in white letters. A yellow star is placed at the top of the disk, which is surrounded by two stylized branches of coffee. Beneath the disk is a white scroll inscribed with the motto "LUTA TRABALHO PAZ" in green letters.

The flag was designed in 1997 by the student Flávio Praxedes, who is today a prosthodontist and a noted, self-taught painter. Praxedes won the contest launched by the municipal administration, his proposal receiving 97% of the votes.

Praxedes explains that the light blue shade used in the flag differs from his original proposal, which had a darker colour. The yellow star symbolizes progress, as on the national flag. LUTA (Struggle) stands for the power of farmers and the unity of the inhabitants of the town. TRABALHO (Labour) represents the achievements of the inhabitants. PAZ (Peace) highlights "a calm way of living in the countryside". The branches of coffee are a symbol of fecundity. The shape and design of the emblem highlight Ipiguá as a new, small but quickly developing town.
