João Ramalho is named for the Portuguese pioneer João Ramalho (1493-1580), who founded in 1553 Santo André da Borda do Campo, today São Bernardo do Campo.
The symbols of João Ramalho are prescribed in Article 1 of the
Municipal Constitution, adopted on 18 March 1990 and revised on 10
September 2009, as "the flag, the coat of arms and the anthem".
