The arms of Saint-Irénée are inspired both by medieval heraldry and toady's
graphic design, offering a both classic and modern image. The municipality
searched for a serious and confidence-inspiring institutional signature, but
without the severity and pomp sometimes conveyed by coats of arms.
The arms
of Saint-Irénée, although they respect the spirit of heraldry, that is, to get a
design visible and identifiable from a distance, are not compliant with the
canons of heraldry; accordingly, they cannot be properly blazoned.
The
different elements of the arms, however, symbolize the village's characteristic
features and history.
The fleur-de-lis, one of the most beautiful
heraldic charges, represents the population's French origin.
Green, or vert,
symbolizes agriculture and forestry, which have been the main source of income
in Saint-Irénée since the origins.
The five horizontal strips or recall
music, the today's muse of Saint-Irénée.
The green and vert motif illustrates
the village's characteristic geography, the bay and the mountains.
The
supporters are tree branches, potato stems - the historic product of the soil of
Saint-Irénée, or boughs of any other cultivated plant, as the symbol of work and
rooting in the ancestors' land.
The motto (Hospitality) in blue letters on a
scroll or confers to the arms the population's human values.
