[Sun Yat-Sen University] by Jorge Candeias

When I was surfing 'round the net I found the flag of the schools of the Sun Yat-San University of Guangdong, CN. (It was originally in Guangzhou [Canton], but most of it has been moved to Zhuhai, near Macau (Only the medical school remains in Canton now.).

In the photo archives of the Zhuhai campus, there is a picture titled the "Southern Gate Square" (http://www.zsu.edu.cn/zhuhai/photos/page/03.htm), and there're some flagstaffs. The only visible flags are quite similar, the flags of the schools of the SYSU. All flags follow the same model, with the name of the school written the bottom line. Note: Clearly the flag isn't reversed on the reverse, and the three short bars on the bottom left side of either side is not repeated the the right side..

The symbol shaped as a flower is the symbol of the university, as can be seen in this page: http://www.zsu.edu.cn/2003/xxgk/xgxxxh.htm.

John talks about "tree short bars", but there are only two in the flags on the photo.

The symbol in the university's webpage is always green, which leads me to suspect that it is its "default" colour, but in the flags it seems to be black.

The name of a certain "school" in the university is added below the "Zhingsan Daxue" characters.
John Ma, 9 December 2004

The characters do not read "Sun Yat-sen", if I am correct. The last two read "university" (dai-gaku in Japanese); the first two read "center mountain", Not sure how to render them in Chinese; the combination might be used simply to represent "China". ("nakayama" in Japanese.)
Albert S. Kirsch, 8 December 2004

China is usually centre kingdom/country, not centre mountain. This looks like it reads "Zhong-shan da-xue", which would be Zhongshan University.

Sun Zhongshan is another name for Sun Yat-sen.
James Dignan, 9 December 2004

Yes, Zhongshan is another name for Sun Yat-sen, who the university is named after. When Dr Sun the revolutionary was lying low in Japan, he used the alias "Nakayama Sho", meaning "Lumberjack in the Middle Mountain". And the characters for "Nakayama" is pronounced "Zhongshan" in Chinese.
