The New Flag

4 Departments or states of my country have new flag designs. Those are: Guainía, Guaviare, Vaupés and Amazonas. No more info about new Amazonas flag yet.
Anibal Villalba, 8 July 2002

In the official site of Colombia's Amazonas Department, in the section dedicated to the departmental flag we see the flag we have above, but in the section for the Governor there's a big photo showing the Governor and behind her a flag (also a smaller one on her office desk) which has the same stripes as the flag we know, but the figures and the star are replaced by the coat of arms of the department.
Paraskevas Renesis, 5 may 2005

Usually there are no Governor flags in Colombia: and they often use the Department flag on their offices. This could be a variant of the Amazonas Department flag. Most of the times, there is a plain Department flag (colors only) but when in official duties, they usually use the Department flag charged with the Department's respective Coat of Arms. This also apply on desk flags, as you can see in the same picture.

In the official website of the Government of the Department of Amazonas at <www.amazonas.gov.co/>, one can see the description of the flag: The dimensions of the flag are: 2.10 mts. long x 1.30 mts wide, with color distributed as follows: Green 90 cms, Mustard Yellow 8 cms and white 32 cms. The silhouettes are: an Indian 29 cms long x 23 cms tall; a tiger 37 cms long x 15 cms tall; a star having 20 cms between each of its tips. The flag was adopted by Decree Number 090 of August 21, 1974.
Regarding the coat of arms, this site mentions that it was adopted by Bill Number 020 of the Department Assembly on March 2, 1995. The description is the Amaon river bordering the land, inscribed in the shape of a local flower called Victoria Regia, with red/yellow feathers on the borders symbolizing the Indian Chiefs' wisdom.
