The municipality of Nechí (22,902 inhabitants in 2009; 914 sq. km) forms the north-eastern corner of the Antioquia Department, 360 km north-east of Medellín. Nechí, originally the name of a river, means "natural gold" in the Katío language and "gold river" in Yamesi language.
Nechi was made a District in 1855, incorporated to Zaragoza from 1858 to 1864, then restored and merged in 1877 with Margento. In 1884, the capital of the Nechí District was transferred to Margento. The Nechí Municipality was established in 1912, with Margento as its capital; the transfer of the capital to Nechí, obtained in 1936, was cancelled by a court decision. In 1942, the Margento Municipality was incorporated to the Caucasia Municipality, of which Nechí became a village. The Nechí Municipality was eventually reestablished in 1981.
Nechí was already known in 1636 as San Antonio de Bermejal, a hamlet where those sailing on rivers Cauca and Nechí could take some rest. Juan Antonio Mon y Velarde, Governor of the Province of Antioquia, renamed the place San José de Nechí in 1788.On 20 October 1815, the Royalist army defeated in Nechí 200 patriots commanded by Colonel Pedro Villapol; the patriots took revenge on 14 May 1820; led by Captain Clemente Jaramillo, they repelled some 500 Royalists from Nechi.
