FMG Flota Mercante Grancolombiana S.A

image from Josef Nuesse site

The Houseflag of FMG Flota Mercante Grancolombiana S.A., can be seen at Josef Nuesse site.
Dov Gutterman, 25 June 2001

Flota Mercante Grancolombiana S.A. was formed in 1947. Brown (1958) shows a different version reversing the colours to white charged with a small blue pennant with a slightly curved hoist. The finer detail is not shown, no doubt due to the size of the image. All subsequent sources show the Josef Nuesse site flag with more success as to the correct portrayal and
colouring. The emblem is a light brown  ships wheel enclosing black bearing a map of Venezuela (yellow), Colombia (blue) and Ecuador (red) with around the edge of this circle the white legend "FLOTA MERCANTE GRANCOLOMBIANA" with 3 small white stars placed at the bottom completing the legend circle.
Neale Rosanoski, 19 October 2003

FMG, Flota Mercante Grancolombiana (the initials FMG are indeed for "Flota" (Fleet), "Mercante" (Merchant) and "Grancolombiana" (Great Colombian), and the name "Grancolombiana" is in honor of the country (unofficially called) Gran Colombia which was in fact called "República de Colombia" but due to its size (it encompassed three countries at the time of its establishment) it was dubbed the "Gran Colombia" (Great Colombia in English).
The company was established in 1946 and began operations the following year, as a joint venture between the three countries that made up the Gran Colombia in the beggining Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. However Venezuela withdrew in 1953. The company was sold in 1997 by Transportación Marítima Mexicana and ceased all operations.
