Introduction: Schill Youth
Schilljugend

The Schill Youth (Schilljugend) was founded in 1924 by Gerhard Roßbach, previously the commander of Roßbach Free Corps while in exile in Salzburg, Austria because of his participation in the Beer Hall Putsch. The organization was named after Ferdinand von Schill (1776-1809), a Prussian cavalry officer who was killed in 1809 while leading an uprising against the French domination. Modelled so as to resemble the League Youth (Bündische Jugend), a contemporary youth movement similar to the Scouting, Schill Youth was intended to indoctrinate young people with Nazi ideas, acting as a legal youth organization of the then-banned National Socialist Party. Even after the party was refounded in 1924, the Schill Youth continued to exist in parallel with the Hitler Youth until 1933, when it was disbanded and absorbed into the latter.
The Schill Youth flag was black, charged with two horizontal white stripes. The design was clearly derived from that of the Roßbach Free Corps. As the emblem of organization reveals, it was used either in rectangular/square or in long triangular shape. Black flags in both of these shapes were used by the League Youth groups as well.
