Ellwangen Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a saltire Gules, each quarter charged with a fleur-de-lis Or.
Meaning:
Ellwangen was already a city in 1200 and had been the centre of the namesake Benedictine Imperial Abbey. Due to increasing autonomy of the citizens there were proper city seals in use since the 14th century, displaying a mitre. After Ellwangen had become a dominion of Württemberg in 1802, the city adopted step by step the arms of the (French) Bishopric of Langres. They already appeared in the Medieval as apocryphal arms of Erlolf and Hariolf (around 764) Bishops of Langres, the founders of Ellwangen Abbey.
