Shield Argent, on a base Vert a throughout embattled wall Gules masoned Sable, with port and windows sable and half open portcullis Argent, topped by a tower Gules with roof Azure, and the port flanked by two trees Vert.
Meaning:
The arms can already be seen on the oldest medieval seal of the city. They show the city wall and tower, with two canting trees, for the -wald (forest) part of the name. The arms remained basically the same but were changed in details, e.g. shape and position of the trees, and colour of the roof.
The flag colours are a reminder of the Saxon reign over the city until 1815.
