Esslingen Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield is a black eagle, armed and tongued red. Upon his breast is an inescutcheon divided per pale into green and red. The dexter side is superimposed by a black "C", the sinister side by a black "E".
Meaning:
Esslingen gained city rights around 1200, and the oldest print of a seal is known since 1232. The seal (which was first mentioned in 1219) already shows the Imperial eagle, which is here representing the Staufen kin. The inescutcheon was added in the 15th century. The original shield was divided into green and brown, the colours of the ceremonial clothes of the civil servants (1516) and of uniforms and flags of the city's militia (1532). Around 1600 the colours changed into green and red, and finally in the 17th century the letters "CE" were added. The letters stand for "Civitas Esslingensis" (city of Esslingen). The current red still has a dark, brownish shade.

The colours of the flag (green and brown) are in use as military colours since 1532. Since 1601 the city colours were green and red.
