Ermershausen Coat of Arms

Shield Gules two bends Or, over all a bell Sable in bend sinister.
Meaning:
The red shield with two bends is taken from the family arms of the Lords of Hutten, who owned Ermershausen and Birkenfeld. They lived in Birkenfeld from 1475 until 1783, when they died out. The bell is alluding to the old parish of Ermershausen. The bell was cast in 1575 and recast in 1858. Today it stands in front of the municipal hall, bearing the inscription "Gott schütze und behüte Ermershausen" (= May God protect and look after Ermershausen). The bell is symbolising the fate of the municipality, which was dissolved during the municipal reform in 1972 and regained its independence in 1994. The square in front of the municipal hall since then has the nickname Liberty Square. The black colour is taken from the black hen on the arms of the Counts of Henneberg, who ruled Ermershausen between 1317 and 1548.
