Shield Or a lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules, under a bendlet Argent, on sinister chief a fish hook Gules.
Meaning:
Zeil was first mentioned as a city in 1383. It had been a Franconian royal estate and became a possession of the Bishopric of Bamberg in the 11th century. Seals are known since the middle of the 15th century. This seal and all later seals displayed the lion with bendlet, the heraldic symbol of the bishopric. A coloured painting is known by the Roll of Arms of the Vassals of Bamberg (1603). As a distinguishing mark the fish hook was added. It had been taken from the arms of Lamprecht of Brunn, Bishop of Bamberg (1347 – 1399). The hook was omitted since the 17th century. In 1819 the shield was parted per bend of Argent and Azure, in order to stress the rule of the Kings of Bayern. In 1837 the old version without hook was restored. The hook was added again in 1994.
