Meaning:
The current pattern already appeared on seals of the local council from 1520 and 1669. It is the lion of the Welfen kin, after the Bishops of Hildesheim had ceded Burgdorf to the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in 1420/1421 at the end of a local war. The dukes erected a castle and enlarged the city. The oaks are representing Burgdorfer Holz, a forest, where many new citizens settled down. The flag colours repeat the colours of the charges.
The arms were confirmed in 1940 by Oberpräsident of Prussian Hannover Province.
