Coat of Arms

In a red field is a golden(= yellow) demi lion issuant placed upon a torse of alternating red and golden (= yellow) elements.
Meaning:
According to source the lion might be alluding either to the Welfen kin or to the Counts of Lauenrode, who also used a lion and ruled the village until 1248. The demi issuant variant had been chosen arbitrarily as a distinction to the numerous other arms also having a Welfen's lion.
The coat of arms was approved to the municipality in 1949 by Lower Saxonian mMinister of Interior. The city rights had been gained later in 1959.

Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, Odin's horn Argent with metal fittings Or.
Meaning:
The name of the borough is derived from "God's horn", and is referring to a pagan sacrificial altar. The name is interpreted as "settlement near the sacred place". The drinking horn in the arms is canting and in the official blazon indeed referred to as Odin's horn. The colours red and white are those of the Lower Saxonian Coat of Arms.
The coat of arms was approved in 1958 by Minister of Interior of Lower Saxony. Flag and banner were approved in 1964.
