Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, a lion rampant Or, armed and tongued Azure.
Meaning:
Frankenau gained city rights in 1242, which were confirmed in 1266 by Landgrave Heinrich I. The city rights remained however defunct and Frankenau was considered to be a village and in the 16th century as a market town. The oldest seals of Frankenau from the same time and the following three seals until 1800 call it a "city" in the circumscription and as charge an uncrowned lion rampant, which was considered to be the lion of Hesse due to the rule of the Counts of Hesse and regardless of the different tincture (not barry). The colours were displayed by Siebmacher (1605) and a crowned version having the same tinctures by Wessel (1621) and von Barkhuis (1724).
