Coat of Arms

Shield Azure; a roof Or having three arches, crowned by five towers Or, number 2 and 4 crowned by a dome Gules, issuant from base a basement Or; sitting on a throne a saint Argent, bearded Argent, dressed Gules and coated Or, nimbed Or, holding a key Argent and a book Sable, flanked by two worshipping men dressed Gules. Above their heads are inscriptions in capitals Or "WAL" and "OTTO".
Meaning:
The coat of arms is an accurate copy of the oldest seal of the city, which is known since 1269. The arms display a city view and display in the front St.Peter, the patron saint of the city, with the brothers Otto and Walram of Nassau. The city was a possession of the Counts of Nassau, who had also granted city rights in 1251. Later seals display either the lion of Nassau alone, or combined with St. Peter. When the city applied for the arms, it was decided to use the composition of the oldest seal.
The seal had been tolerated as coat of arms in 1906, confirmed in 1935.
