Shield Azure a key Argent in bend.
Meaning:
A charter from 1235 already announced a city seal. Mutterstadt had some characteristics of a city in the Medieval. Proper seals howver didn´t appear beofre the 15th century. An abbreviation in the circumscription probably means village. All proper seals until the 18th century displayed St. Peter, holding the key by his dexter hand and a book, later a fishnet, by his sinister hand. An image of the saint was painted on the wall of the municipal hall in 1774. In the 19th century the knowledge about the details of the image got lost and there remained only an image, displaying only the key as attribute of the saint. The arms are based on that painting. The tinctures are those of Bayern.
