Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (=white) shield, is a red, rampant, double queued lion crowned, armed and tongued blue. In the green chief is a golden (=yellow) postal horn with a blue cord.
Meaning:
According to source the lion is symbolizing the counts of Berg, the former rulers, who owned the area. The horn symbolizes the fact that the town grew around a major post station of the Thurn und Taxis postal service in the 18th century. The station was situated on a major crossroads Köln-Düsseldorf and Solingen-Hitdorf. The green colour is symbolizing the rural character of the city in former times.

Although Langenfeld gained city rights in 1948, according to source the coat of arms was approved to the rural commune of Langenfeld already on 26 July 1939 by Oberpräsident of Prussian Rhineprovince (information provided by Marco Klatt, city archive, on 10 Nov 2011). There is no information given about approval of the banner or flag.
