Sayda Coat of Arms

Shield Or a lion rampant parted per fess of Vert and Gules.
Meaning:
Around 1200 the Kingdom of Böhmen established a castle and a customs station in Sayda. In 1253 Sayda was acquired by the Margraves of Meißen per exchange. It was called a city in 1289. As many jews settled down in the city, it became an important place of trading, but also of numerous crafts. Sayda finally gained formal city rights. The city arms are the family arms of the Lords of Schönberg, whose seat had been the nearby Purschenstein since 1336. They had been manorial lords and they also held the local cognisance. The oldest city seal is known since 1454. There is a legend about the fight of a family member against a lion during a crusade. The lion was seriously injured, fell into a river and died. The lower half of his body was covered with green reed.
