Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a red - white - red horizontal triband with ratio approx. 1:4:1. The municipal coat of arms is in the white stripe and slightly shifted to the hoist.

Description of coat of arms:
The red shield is divided by two blue bends wavy, fimbriated silver (= white). The whole is superimposed by a silver (= white) nettle leaf with an inescutcheon in its centre. The inescutcheon is divided per fess into silver (= white) over red.
Meaning:
The city was founded by Duke Friedrich III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf as a sanctuary for Dutch refugees, who could here enjoy their freedom of worship. As a gesture of thank the settlers gave the place the name of their benefactor. Friedrichstadt gained city rights already in 1633. The city is built up in Dutch style, rectangular with many channels. The coat of arms is based upon a seal from 1625 and had been modified several times since then. The final version was created in 1986. The nettle leaf is symbolizing the house of Gottorf. The bends wavy are symbolizing the rivers Treene and Eider.
