Husum Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield is an open red gatehouse flanked by red palisades. The gatehouse is topped by three red flags. In the open gate are two blue lions statant, armed and tongued red, ordered paly.
Meaning:
Husum existed already in the 12th century. The location had direct access to the sea after heavy losses of land by stormfloods. Husum gained the rank of a market town in 1462, granted by Danish King Christian I, lost this rank however, after haven taking part in an insurrection against the king in 1472 as an act of punishment. Husum regained the rank in 1472 resp. 1492 (sources differ) and finally gained the rank of a city in 1603. The three flags are symbolizing the ancient three gates and the former settlement cores of Osterhusum, Westerhusum and Norderhusum, growing together in 13th and 14th century. The lions in the open gate are those of Schleswig. Adolf and Johann Adolf, Dukes of Gottorf, heralded the blooming period of Husum in the end of the 16th century. Husum became one of the most important cities of the duchy of Schleswig in the 17th century.
