Description of coat of arms:
Shield Azure, a prancing horse Argent.
Meaning:
To Hardegsen city rights were granted in 1383 by Duke Otto of Braunschweig-Göttingen, but the horse already appears on a slightly older seal of the city. At first the horse was displayed without shield. All later seals and images since 1633 displayed the horse on a shield , sometimes sinister facing. The shield had been oval, was decorated by leaves and a motto in two scrolls reading in Latin: "recte faciendo neminem timeas" (= doing right you shouldn't fear anybody) and "audiatur et altera pars" (it should be heard by the other part(y)). The colours were first mentioned in 1891 by H.Ahrens. The nowadays horse sometimes is considered to be the Lower Saxonian horse.
