Oberstdorf Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, a sinister facing horse forcene Argent bridled Sable.
Meaning:
In 1835 the municipality applied for a local seal, displaying the family arms of the Lords of Haimenhofen, because Oswald of Haimenhofen had acquired the village in 1370. In order to charm away the doubts of the Bavarian king, who usually refused to grant extincted family arms to municipalities, the municipality stressed that the horse was symbolising horse breeding as main business line of the Allgäu district. Furthermore today Oberstdorf is one of the four ski jump stages of the famous Vierschanzen Tournee, the" Four Hills Tournament".
