Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a white flag having red horizontal stripes at the top- and bottom edge. The coat of arms is in the white stripe and shifted to the hoist.
Description of coat of arms:
In the middle of the red shield is a silver (= white) well, masoned black. Down from a pale two water jets are pouring water into the well's basement. The well is flanked by two leaves of water lily of the same colour. On top of the pale is a golden (=yellow) owl couchant guardant.
Meaning:
The well as the main figure is canting. The name of the city means "living spring" or "quickly flowing fountain". The fountain was located alongside a highway, which had been used for the transport of cattle from Jütland to Hamburg. In the nearby "Uhlenkrog", i.e. the owl's tavern, where the medieval cowboys rested. The leaves are symbolizing two small local lakes. The colours red and white are those of Holstein.
