Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. The flag is divided per bend sinister wavy into yellow over red. In the upper hoist corner are two blue, statant lions, tongued red. In the lower fly corner is a white nettle leaf. It is an armorial flag.

Both arms and flag are described at the county website: On 16 Dec 1980 the county-council decided to adopt a flag: yellow over red separated by a wavy fly-diagonal line; on yellow in top hoist two blue lions passant armed red on top of each other, in bottom fly a white nettle-leave. Illustration based on the depiction at Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website (from Reißmann 1997). Approved 9 February 1981, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website.

Rendsburg-Eckernförde Coat of Arms

[Rendsburg-Eckernförde County CoA (Germany)] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 13 Jan 2013

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per bend sinister wavy into golden (= yellow) and red. On the dexter chiefpoint are two blue, statant lions, tongued red. On the sinister basepoint is a silver (= white) nettle leaf.
Meaning:
The area oft he current Rendburg-Eckernförde County consists more or less of the former counties of Rendburg, Eckernförde and Bordesholm, which had been established by Prussian government in 1867. Bordesholm County was already dissolved in 1932 and partially incorporated into Rendsburg County. 17 municipalities were transferred to Steinburg County in 1970. Rendburg-Eckernförde is the only county consisting of territories north and south of Eider river, which had been the historical border between the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein and long before between Danmark and the Holy Roman Empire. Thus not the symbols of the former counties, castle and squirrel, had been chosen and the coat of arms is quasi a variant of the coat of arms of Schleswig-Holstein. The bend wavy is symbolizing Eider River, the lions of Schleswig are representing the parts north of the river, i.e. the Hohner Harde Subcounty and the former Eckernförde County, while the nettle leaf of Holstein is representing the parts south of the river, i.e. mainly the districts of former Rendsburg County and the western parts of former Bordesholm County.

The flag was approved on 29 January 1981 and introduced on 9 February 1981. The coat of arms was approved on 31 July 1972. The artists are Wilhelm Horst Lippert and Otto Engmann.
