The Municipal Roll of Arms Schleswig-Holstein Onlinedoesn't mention a flag, which probably never had been approved officially. There just a coat of arms is mentioned, approved on 13 March 1930. But mostly a white over red horizontal bicolour and the flaghead, with coat of arms in its center, is separated by a thin, red, vertical line can be seen.(editorial note: acc. to §1(2)of local Hauptsatzung, version 21 July 2008 says: "The flag shows the colours white and red with coat of arms", which is not particularly )

The flag of Neumünster is mentioned in Stadler 1970 (writing from memory): in a white field at the hoist the arms, followed by red-white. This sounds similar to the flag of
Dithmarschen but too inaccurate to be sure of any particular design.

And he is right! This is the pattern, described in Stadler 1970, p.105. It is a red over white horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms is in a white flaghead.

From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
Neumünster was founded around the 'new abbey' in 1130. In 1870 it became a city. The arms are a combination of the modern city (industry) and its history (swan and Nesselblatt). The swan is the symbol of the Stormarn, to which Neumünster belonged. The Nesselblatt (nettle-leaf) is the old symbol of the counts of Holstein. Already in the early 19th century industry developed in the city, mainly leather and textile industries. (editorial note: §1(1) of local Hauptsatzung says: "The red shield is divided per fess. below is a white swan of Stormarn rising his wings with an impending white nettle leaf. Above is a white factory with five chimneys")Sources: Stadler 1970 and Reißmann 1997.
