Weißensee Coat of Arms

Shield Azure two fish haurient embowed addorsed Argent, surrounding a 7-point star Or on heart point.
Meaning:
The Landgraves of Thüringen had a castle after 1150 in the area. At the same time a settlement of merchants around the old market square and a church, dedicated to St. Nicolas, developed. A little later a second settlement around the church, dedicated to St. Peter and St.Paul, was established. The latter had the rights of a market town in 1198 and was called a city in 1212. In 1280 the privilege was gained to elect a proper city council, which also held the local cognisance. In 1337 the Order of St. John administrated the churches and a hospital. 1485 the city was acquired by the Electorate of Sachsen, until it was acquired by the Kingdom of Preußen in 1815. The two name giving lakes were drained, one in 1704, the other in 1788. The arms are based on local seals since the 13th century, which all displayed among others a fish. The fish are probably a representation of the former lakes. The star is a mere decorating ornament.

The banner is used without approval. The arms are in use since the 19th century. Both were confirmed on 17 June 2019 by the city council.
