Introduction

After World War Two, the Prussian Province of Saxony and the State of Anhalt were merged to form the State of Saxony-Anhalt. This was abolished in 1952, then re-established in 1990.
Norman Martin, 1 Mar 1998

In 1945 Anhalt was merged with the larger part of the Prussian province Saxony (Provinz Sachsen) to form the new Provinz Sachsen (Province Saxony, 23 July 1945 to 3 December 1946), later on called Provinz Sachsen-Anhalt (Province Saxony-Anhalt, 3 December 1946 to 21 June 1947), then Land Sachsen-Anhalt (Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt, 21 June 1947 to 26 July 1952).

Saxony-Anhalt Civil Flag 1946-1952
Saxony-Anhalt State Flag 1946-1948

Horizontal bicolour black-yellow. Officially adopted 28 April 1884 as flag of the Prussian province Saxony. Used as flag of Saxony-Anhalt State [Land Sachsen-Anhalt] 1946-1952.
Norman Martin, 1 Mar 1998

The civil flag remained from 1945-1952 the old black-yellow flag of the Provinz Sachsen. This was officially prescribed by a decree of the province governor (Oberspräsident) on 24 October 1945 and later in the constitution of 10 January 1947.

The flag was adopted on 5 August 1949 and abolished on 29 January 1951. According to Schurdel 1995 the leaves around the hammers should be green, not yellow like the wheat ears.
M. Schmöger, 9 Mar 2001

In the 1948 coat-of-arms the leaves were green. Also please note that there are no two hammers on the coat-of-arms but a hammer and a mallet.
Ralf Stelter, 9 Mar 2001

The new arms was used from about the beginning of 1947, but only officially prescribed in the Wappengesetz (Law on the Coat-of-Arms) of 14 December 1948. As for service flags the situation is somewhat obscure. It is clear that from 5 August 1949 to about 29 January 1951 a car flag might be used. This was prescribed in a Durchführungsverordnung zum Wappengesetz (Regulation for Implementation of the Law on the Coat-of-Arms). This flag had proportions of about 2:3 (exactly 22 cm × 32.5 cm) and had the arms in the centre of the black-yellow bicolour. The flag might be used by the Ministerpräsident (prime minister), the Minister (ministers) and the Präsident des Landtags (president of the state parliament). Before 1949 there are two hints that similar flags were used as car flags. After 29 January 1951 car flags containing the arms were not allowed anymore in the German Democratic Republic.
