Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, on top of a trefoiled arch Argent a castle Argent roofed Gules with three towers of the same, beneath the arch a sinister facing lion passant barry of eight of Argent and Gules, crowned and armed Or.
Meaning:
Though Homberg was mentioned as a city first in 1311, it had proper seals long before since 1234. All seals since the 16th century display a castle or city wall, with the lion barry of the Landgraves of Thuringia, since 1274 Counts of Hessen, to which the city belonged. In a seal from 1536 the lion was sinister facing. The current arms are based on this seal. In the 17th until the 19th century the arms appear in many rolls of arms in different colours. First the lion was displayed red in silver, later gold in blue (Nassau). The current arms are based on the version of Otto Hupp (1925).
