There is another flag, displaying the city arms in the middle of the civil flag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with a white inscription "Sassnitz" on the red stripe under the shield, written in a serifed designer font type.

    Sassnitz Coat of Arms

In a blue field a red and silver (=white) lighthouse tower is sending two silver (=white) rays shaped like trapeziums to both sides. The tower is standing upon a red wall, masoned silver (=white).
    Meaning:
The municipality was established in 1906 by a merger of Saßnitz, a village of fishermen, with Crampas, a village of farmers. Both settlements developed to important seaside resorts since the 1830ies. In 1909 a ferry to Trelleborg in Sweden was established. There were also factories for the production of all kinds of fish food and chalk. Sassnitz became the most important location for industries on the island. It thus gained city rights in 1957. The arms are showing a representation of the local lighthouse. The masoned wall is symbolising the quick development of the city. From the end of the 1920ies till the end of the 1950ies the coat of arms was blue, charged with a green bend sinister fimbriated golden and displaying two golden fish, issuant from the bend sinister a red demi-griffin at dexter and a lighthouse like in the current arms at sinister, beneath a white ship in bend sinister with two smoking funnels of red and white and blue-white flags on prow and stern. This pattern was abolished, as it didn't match basic heraldic rules.

The arms were adopted by the local council in 1959 and confirmed by decree of the local council ion 1 November 1994. The flag was approved on 9 July 1997 by Minister of Interior of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Both were published in the Municipal Roll of Arms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as no.17 Various other patterns are said to be used before since 1957.
