Wittenberg County Coat of Arms

[Wittenberg CoA] image by Jens Pattke, 15 Mar 2005

Shield parted per fess of Sable and Argent, over all two swords Gules in saltire.
Meaning:
The arms had been also the arms of the Dukes of Saxony-Wittenberg as Archmarshalls of the Holy Roman Empire. We here have one of the rare cases that a coat of arms is directly derived from a flag, the so called "Reichsrennfahne" (literally: empire's running flag). The name is based on the act of Berennung. It was celebrated, when a nobleman received a fiefdom from the Emperor, who was sitting on a scaffold, which was circuited thrice by horse in full speed. This act was fulfilled first without and later with flag.

The arms were approved on 28 February 1939 and confirmed on 21 November 1994 by the County Council. The flag was approved on 14 October 1996.
