Wittmund Doubtful Traditional Tricolour

[Wittmund 'traditional' flag] 3:5 image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 16 Nov 2013
approved

Description of flag:
It is a red over black over red horizontal tricolour. Van Hejningen assumes that the black stripe is the "dark green", which was mentioned within Hauptsatzung above and was taken from an, however unknown, primordial source.

Van Hejningen's Proposal 2005

3:5
[ flag] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 16 Nov 2013

Description of flag:
It is a horizontal 7-stripes flag, blue - yellow - red - black - red - yellow - blue.
Explanation:
Hans van Hejningen explains, how the current flag (see above) was adopted in 1930. As a result the tinctures of the coat of arms had to be changed. At the end of his article the author gives a proposal explaining the colours as follows: "they are representing Harlingerland and Attena (kin) [blue, yellow], Rietberg [red, yellow], , Eastern Frisia [blue, red, black] and Germany [black/red/yellow]. Furthermore the three central stripes are representing the traditional flag of Wittmund [which is however not explained within the article]".

The flag was approved on 12 February 1930 by Prussian minister of state and re-adopted on 18 December 1973 by the city council.
