Berliner Ruder Club blade

[Berliner RC blade (Rowing Club, Germany)] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 21 Sep 2008

Description of blade:
The blade of BRC is repeating the pattern of the first flag(1880) rotated 90° and the white edges cut away. The star however kept pointing upwards.

Special thanks to Udo Korgitzsch, a former chairman of BRC and later a functionary in the Berlin Landesruderverband. Without his invaluable help, the contribution about BRC and Berlin rowing clubs as a whole would not have been possible.

Brief history: BRC was established by former members of BRV von 1876. They were lead by Georg W. Büxenstein, a member of the free mason’s lodge “Roter Stern”(=red star). Some say that this was the reason for implementing a red star in the centre of flag. Others claim however, that the star wasn’t shaped like a hexagram, as it is obviously today. The secession occurred due to personal differences to the board of BRV von 1876.

Since than BRC used a flag with a chequered canton consisting of nine rectangles in greenish blue and white. The canton of that flag was a simplified version of that one from “Nettie”.

In the 70ies of the 20th century Berliner-Ruder Verein von 1876(BRV) ran out of members. So this club merged with BRC in August 1972, but indeed it was simply overtaken.
Giving respect to the fact, that BRV was the older club, the new name was at first: Berliner Ruder-Club- Vereinigung von BRC und BRV v.1876” (see RA 77). Later the amendment was taken away. Since than the BRC used the current flag.
