The company was located in Lübeck. It is a white flag. In the centre is a green disc with a white “lying” 8-point star.

The stars are smaller than shown by the source and its similar publication by Esso of Deutsche Reedereien und ihre Erkennungszeichen” 1958 edition and should be nearly throughout the circle in line with the attached [de~s1234a.gif, de~h436a.gif and de~h435a.gif]. (See images below, ed.)
It will be noticed that the green vertical stripe beneath the letter "H" is actually the horizontal bar of the letter being formed by a downward placed loop [see a scan from the quoted source attached - de~hornemann.jpg].

US Navy 1961 shows all three flags but to me their emblem looks more like a couped cross with forked ends rather that a star [see de~s1235a.gif, de~h437a.gif and de~h438a.gif]. They also, for Stern and Hornemann show the star/cross being within the circle, though less than the images currently shown, whereas their Hemmersan [sic] version has it nearly throughout the circle as do the 1957 and 1958 German sources.

The set up the company is not clear. According to one mention Stern-Linie GmbH operated from 1950 to 1985 but their shipowning and operating activities seem to have finished in 1967. Originally shown in Lloyds under this name, by the late 1950s they are shown as Stern-Linie Hemmersam u. Hornemann. From sourcing back to individual ships ownership all three names are mentioned although the last two mentioned names do not appear to have become shipowners until 1956.
Possibly partners, maybe from the start.
