The flag is a horizontal triband of blue and white with three letters, apparently in black (doubtful), in the center: "W v E".
Jorge Candeias,5 Jan 2005
Jorge Candeias' and James Dignan's speculations led to the name as it appears in the source, but again I did not find anything about the firm. The image is good in view of the circumstances, only the letters are somewhat thicker taking up about 8/10 of stripe height plus 1/2 of stripe width; also there are dots after "W" and "v", not after "E".
Jan Mertens, 22 Dec 2006
It is a blue over white over blue horizontal triband. In the white stripe is a blue inscription "WvE"(i.e. the "v" has only half size).

Another one from my old files, but now the caption is clear: the name of the company is F. M. Bruhn. The flag is, again, blue and, again, contains a white star, only this time with 5 points and bearing a red "B" within.

The company started her business in 1866, iniated by the Flensburgian merchant Friedrich Mommse Bruhn. The company existed under this label until 1875. After WW1, when Süderhaff, Ekensund and Gravenstein had been ceded to Denmark, the company was reestablished in 1920 under this label. But it was impossible to repeat the success of the early years due to the development of railway and bus services in the area. In 1934 Hermann Bruhn, the founder's son, had to dissolve the company. Nearly all vessels were sold to Fördereederei in Flensburg. There remained two freighters, which ran a service to Hamburg. The company got a new legal form and was renamed into Flensburg-Ekensunder AG. After both vessels had been sunk in 1941, the company was completely dissolved.
The blue flag was divided by a white centred cross. In the quarters were white initials "F"(upper hoist), "E"(upper fly), "D"(lower hoist) and "G"(lower fly).

In 1873 the people of Sonderburg (Sønderborg) established an own steamship company. But it was realized that the region wasn't big enough for two steamship companies. So in 1875 the Flensburg-Ekensunder & Sonderburger Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft was established, called "Vereinigte" by the locals. This company operated successfully until the eve of WW1. Due to the division of Schleswig after the end of WW1 the company was dissolved in 1920.

The company was based in Flensburg. The flag was parted per saltire into blue (hoist and fly) and yellow (top and bottom). The colours were those of the Duchy of Schleswig.

Cycling towards the Danish-German border, I saw a ship on the Kiel canal belonging to the shipping company Förderverein Salondampfer Alexandra e.V., whose only purpose is to preserve and sail the Salondampfer Alexandra, Flensburg. Its house flag is per saltire yellow over blue.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 27 Aug 2001
Please note that SS ALEXANDRA still uses flag and funnel Vereinigte-Flensburg-Ekensunder und Sonderburger Dampfschiff Gesellschaft.
