The municipality of Næstved (80,967 inhabitants in 2012; 68,100 ha) was
established in 2007 as the merger of the former municipalities of Næstved,
Fladså (7,581 inh. in 2005), Fuglebjerg (2,181 inh.), Holmegaard (7,442 inh.),
and Suså (8,529 inh.).
The arms of Næstved were first featured on a seal
dated 1280, showing two crossed key over two waves. The crown was subsequently
later, as seen on a seal dated 1421, the year King Eric of Pomerania (1396-1439)
regained control of the town. In the 1500s, only the royal crown was kept on the
arms, to be changed for three crowns in the 1600s. The original design of the
arms was re-established around 1900.
The two crossed keys, St. Peter's
attributes, refer both to the St. Peter Convent (today's Herlufsholm) and the
St. Peter church. The broad wave in base represents river Suså (83 km, watering
Næstved), previously represented by two narrower waves.
