Introduction of Canton

The name giver of the canton is José Eloy Alfaro Delgado (1842 - 1912), who had been a general and afterwards twice president of Ecuador (1895 - 1901 and 1906 - 1911). He is considered to be the most important liberal politician of the country.

The shield of the coat of arms on flag (see left image above) is parted by a yellow fess charged with a rising radiant red sun, in chief parted per fess; at dexter two black palm trees issuant from an irregular green base crossing an irregular yellow field with two red spots and growing to a sky blue top; at sinister a sinister facing yellow cow statant spotted orange on a green base under a blue sky with black trees, maybe poplars; in base a coast line with red soil, white sands on the beach, and some yellow and green fields behind, in the blue sea there are a dolphin at dexter, another fish at sinister and a nearly invisable a shrimp. The shield is flanked at either side by the furled flags of Esmeraldas province over the canton flag without arms. All with yellow cravats, the shield is crested by a indigenous golden sun mask.
Meaning:
The example on shield probably is stressing the rural character, referring to shrimp and fish farming (base), cattle breeding (sinister chief) and agriculture (dexter chief); unfortunately no idea about the sun and mask. The coast line in base might be the northern end of Bocana del Lagarto (literally: the lizard's mouth).
Source. this governmental webpage Facebook displays another coat of arms (see right image above), basically the same but many different details, the fields of the shield are all in natural colours like photos, the yellow fess also has been replaced by a cloudy sky, in base the dolphin has disappeared and the shrimp had become red, furthermore there is a fish trawler between fish and shrimp.
