The parish of Chanduy is part of Santa Elena canton (Santa Elena
province).
Chanduy is the oldest settlement of the Santa Elena peninsula; already
inhabited before the Spanish colonization. Chanduy is named for a
Chimú word meaning "a high plain".
The Battle of Chanduy opposed in 1834 the governmental troops,
commanded by Colonel Juan Otamendi (1798-1845), to the revolted
Chihuahuas, commanded by the Venezuelan Colonel Andrés Subero;
defeated, Otomendi fled on his horse, losing his three-cornered straw
hat sombrero, which was kept by Subero as a battle trophy.
Chanduy is the birth place of the lawyer José Luis Tamayo Terán
(1858-1947), President of Ecuador from 1920 to 1924.
The parish of Chanduy was established on 29 May 1861.

The flag of the parish is horizontally divided blue-celestial blue-white.
Blue represents the sea that bathes the coast of Chanduy; the sea is
the workplace of several fishers and the main source of income for the
inhabitants of the area.
Celestial blue represents the sky that forms, together with the sea,
the beautiful maritime horizon.
White represents the people's purity, transparency, peace, and
harmony; accordingly, Chanduy is a place suitable to welcome the
foreign visitors of the country.
