The canton was formed on 25 June 1824..
The flag of Portoviejo is presented on the municipal
website.
Designed by Tomás Chávez Valenzuela, from Guayaquil, the flag
of Portoviejo is quartered blue with two horizontal white stripes
(the colours of the flag of Guayaquil),
green, red and white.
The colours of the flag of Guayaquil recalls the influence of the
9 October 1820 events [The flag of Guayaquil has three white
stars in the central blue star, symbolizing the three hotspots of
the anti-colonial uprising of 9 October 1820, Guayaquil,
Portoviejo and Machala] on the inhabitants of Manabí, and,
especially, on those of Portoviejo.
Green represents the exuberance of the valley. Red represents the
blood shed by the inhabitants in their struggle for obtaining and
defending freedom. White represents the transparent sky, the
soul, the spirit and the thoughts of the inhabitants, as well as
the white sunrises.
A photograph
available on the municipal website shows the flag in the meeting
room of the Town Hall: Another photograph,
showing the flag behind the mayor, confirms that the stripes
in the first quarter should be light blue.
